LinkMesh vs Edge Delta
LinkMesh vs Edge Delta
Edge Delta shapes and masks telemetry at the edge, before it leaves the host, and composes pipelines in a visual builder. Its pipeline is free with no throughput limit, which is a genuinely strong offer and the first thing worth saying about it.
The trade is where the control plane lives. Edge Delta agents run in your environment while the control plane is Edge Delta’s SaaS, and there is no self-hosted option for it. LinkMesh is the other shape: standard OpenTelemetry Collectors, managed from a control plane you run yourself.
Our matrix marks several things unverified for this product — the access-control model, Git-backed configuration history, and live record preview. We publish that rather than guess at it.
Side by side
| LinkMesh | Edge Delta | |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime managed | otelcol-contrib over OpAMP, Grafana Alloy over remotecfg | Edge Delta’s own agents |
| Standards | OpenTelemetry Collector configuration | Ingests and emits OTLP; the pipeline is Edge Delta’s own |
| Control plane | Self-hosted, in your infrastructure | Edge Delta-hosted SaaS; no self-hosted option |
| Air-gapped operation | Supported — no outbound dependency | Not available: the control plane is vendor-hosted |
| Pipeline cost | Per managed collector, with a free tier | The pipeline itself is free, with no throughput limit |
| Masking before egress | On the host, before anything leaves the network | Masking and shaping at the edge, before data leaves the host |
| Best fit | OpenTelemetry fleets that must keep the control plane in-house | Teams wanting a free, managed edge pipeline |

Choose Edge Delta if…
- A free pipeline with no throughput limit is hard to argue with, and if a vendor-hosted control plane is acceptable to you, that is a very good deal.
- You want edge shaping without running any control plane yourself, and you would rather not carry that operational work at all.
- Your priority is reducing data at the source and you are not tied to the OpenTelemetry Collector as the runtime.
Choose LinkMesh if…
- A vendor-hosted control plane is not acceptable — regulated, air-gapped, or a procurement rule you do not get to argue with.
- You are standardised on OpenTelemetry Collectors and want those managed, rather than adopting another agent.
- You want configuration that outlives the vendor: standard OTel config runs anywhere, including without us.
Common questions
Is Edge Delta’s pipeline really free?
Yes — the pipeline itself is free with no throughput limit, and it is worth saying plainly rather than burying. What it does not include is a self-hosted control plane: the agents run in your environment, the control plane is Edge Delta’s SaaS. Whether that trade works is an environment question, not a pricing one.
Can Edge Delta run fully inside my network?
The agents can; the control plane cannot. If your requirement is that nothing about the management layer leaves your network — which is common in regulated and air-gapped estates — that rules it out regardless of how good the pipeline is.
Does Edge Delta manage OpenTelemetry Collectors?
It manages its own agents rather than OpenTelemetry Collectors over OpAMP, and its pipeline is its own even though it ingests and emits OTLP. LinkMesh manages stock otelcol-contrib and Grafana Alloy, so the question is whether you want to adopt an agent or keep the ones you have.
What have you not verified about this product?
The access-control model, whether configuration history is Git-backed, and whether a live record preview exists. Our matrix says "not verified" for those rather than filling them in. Ask Edge Delta directly if they matter to your evaluation.
